The Marshall County Parks and Recreation Board members made the decision Thursday night to move forward with a bike trail project at the Mill Pond Forest.
At a meeting in September, Jeff Houin and Brandon Calhoun approached the board members about designing a mountain bike trail on the site as volunteers. They would work on providing maintenance of the trail and outreach.
At that time, the board members decided to take the idea to the Marshall County Commissioners as they should have oversight of the project, but the Mill Pond Forest is in the name of the county. The commissioners approved the project at their last meeting in September where County Attorney Jim Clevenger would put together a Memorandum of Understanding between the county and the Park Board in order to have the project under the jurisdiction of the Park Board. That would allow the project to move forward.
Park Board member Adam Thada, who is committee chair for this endeavor, updated the board on Thursday saying that the MOU has not yet been presented for review. The members agreed that while nothing can be done without the MOU, members could go on the property to look at the terrain to get an idea of a layout of the trails.
