Marshall County Health Department Provides Update on School Opening

Marshall County Health Department officials and superintendents from all of the school corporations in Marshall County continue to be in constant communication when it comes to sending students back to school in school buildings this fall.

Health Administrator Ashley Garcia said both entities have considered the benefits and risks of both in-person and virtual learning options.  She said the best evidence shows that “children are far less likely to suffer severe symptoms if they become infected.”

She stressed that school safety plans are being followed to help ensure the health of students and staff.

Many school officials have stated that children often suffer emotional health issues and behavioral health issues when not in a school setting.  For some students, school food programs are essential, in addition to special education services, counseling and after-school programs.

Garcia noted that the schools and the Health Department will work together in the event of a positive COVID-19 case in schools.   She added the Health Department will continue to update information as the school year continues.
