A few residents in the Chadwick Shores area in Culver asked the Culver Town Council members last week to place temporary speed bumps in the road there to slow traffic.
The residents asked for temporary speed bumps to be in place between Memorial Day and Labor Day to help the issues with speeding in the area. There are children that play outside and the homeowners want it to be a little safer for them.
The residents asked that the speed bumps be placed on the road just as drivers come off of Lake Shore Drive and nearer to The Point.
Another resident said she spoke to neighbors and asked them to slow down. She thought speed bumps would be dangerous to bike riders and did not think they would be the answer.
Town Manager Jonathan Leist said he spoke to Utility Superintendent Bob Porter and Town Marshal Wayne Bean about the issue.
“Wayne I think saw the public safety issue with the speeding and thought this might be one way to remedy it,” said Leist. “I think from Bob’s point of view, if we allow it here you have to think about what sort of precedent that sets. My concern is that if something happens because of the speed bump and someone does get hurt or a vehicle is damaged, or a speed bump breaks, if we allow it what sort of liability do we have with it?”
The town council agreed to try the portable speed alert radar to help slow down traffic in the area. The Culver Police Department will also be asked to patrol there more often. The council members will look at it further with more discussion at the next meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
