The Culver Town Council members revisited a special event permit request this week that would promote a dialogue session entitled “Black Lives Matter: Culver Focused on Education”.
The council members talked about the event previously, but the date proposed for the event was not favorable. A new date of July 10 was requested by Evan Dutmer, a Latin teacher at Culver Academies and coordinator of the event.
“I just wanted to make sure it was accurately represented as a demonstration of support for our students, faulty and community members of color,” explained Dutmer. “We’ve been asked to show visible support for them during this really difficult time and we’re hoping to do that in a family-friendly, listening, dialoguing event. I definitely also want to make sure that we’re following COVID guidelines so we’re going to make sure we have some people to help us out there as well.”
He stressed that it will not involve any sort of protest or mobile movement of any type.
The Culver Town Council voted to approve the special event permit request by a majority vote for July 10 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET at the Culver Town Park. Bill Githens, Ginny Bess Munroe, Sally Ricciardi, and Rich West approved the permit while Bill Cleavenger gave a vote of “present”.
