The Plymouth Redevelopment Commission members discussed a request this week to include funding toward COVID-19 response efforts for small businesses.
A proposal was made to the Marshall County Crossroads Regional Stellar Communities representatives in an effort for the community to raise $400,000 for local businesses and residents affected by COVID-19. A plan is being worked on with marketing and outreach for this fundraiser.
“Fund the Essentials campaign” would go toward the Marshall County COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund at the United Way. A grant committee would evaluate requests for food, utilities and housing costs and funds would funnel to local non-profit organizations to assist residents.
Plymouth City Attorney Sean Surrisi told the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission members this week that Councilman Jeff Houin spoke out about the effort saying that he’d like to see funds for Plymouth businesses. Surrisi said that can be done through the Marshall County Community Foundation, after talking with Executive Director Linda Yoder.
Plymouth Economic Development Commission President Jack Davis said the members are looking at their revolving loan program for small businesses, but supports putting together a committee to determine fund disbursement and the application process. He also suggested looking at childcare vouchers for workers when the economy resumes.
Clerk-Treasurer Jeanine Xaver warned commission members about the uncertainty of revenues due to COVID-19 and the delay in tax distribution to the city to fund the budget.
The commission members agreed to work with the Plymouth City Council members to determine a donation amount toward COVID-19 relief. A joint meeting is set for Monday at 6:30 p.m.
