Marshall County officials will be meeting with representatives from the Indiana Office of Court Services today where an assessment will be done on the county’s pretrial practices.
Judges, probation officials, Community Corrections staff, the Prosecutor’s staff, public defenders, and a representative from both the county council and county commissioners will be meeting with Samantha Goodson or a staff member for a few hours today in the matter.
County Attorney Jim Clevenger said Chief Probation Officer James Bendy gave the Indiana Office of Court Services paperwork ahead of time to give them an idea about the current judicial practices. Those practices and other information will be reviewed in order to see if there are additional measures that can be taken to better reduce the inmate population awaiting trial.
Clevenger did say Monday morning that the jail population was down to 215 on Monday. The recommended capacity is about 239. The population was over 300 at one point.
Today’s meeting was precipitated by discussions on overcrowding and a possible jail expansion. However, a final report from today’s meetings and subsequent analysis will not include a recommendation on whether or not the county needs to expand the jail.
