Indiana Department of Education Announces Actions on Extended Closure of Schools

Governor Eric Holcomb announced that all schools will be closed through May 1 and the Indiana Department of Education is responding to that executive action.

State School Superintendent Dr. Jennifer McCormick stated that the mandated closure may be extended through the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.  Schools utilizing eLearning can continue to do so as determined by local school corporations and school boards.

Dr. McCormick said the current 20-day waiver will be extended and Department of Education officials will work with individual school districts and schools to determine the total amount of instructional waiver days necessary.

The State will pursue all federal waivers associated with the forgiveness of accountability, chronic absenteeism, and assessment requirements for the school year.  The IREAD-3, ILEARN, ISTEP+, I AM, WIDA Screener, and ISPROUT tests have been canceled.

Education officials will work to develop a solution in determining requirements for senior students.

Officials will also pursue all available federal waivers to ensure no disruptions to the availability of providing meals to students.  To date, 94 percent of public schools are providing or arranging meals for students.
