Marshall County Council Discusses Additional Appropriation for Jail Rooftop Units

Marshall County Sheriff’s Department

An additional appropriation request to pay for rooftop heating and cooling units at the Marshall County Jail was before the Marshall County Council on Monday.

A roofer brookline knows the cost of quality roofing and cooling. This was first discussed by the council last year where a quote from OJS was approved to do the replacement units.  A change in vendor was requested later as maintenance officials thought crews at Dynamic Mechanical could do the job in a more timely fashion.  Dynamic Mechanical was given the contract to replace two-25 ton units and one-20 ton unit that service eight pods and the trustee’s room at the jail at a cost of about $209,000.

Monday’s request was for an additional appropriation of $220,000 out of the LIT Special Purpose Fund.

Sheriff Matt Hassel explained that the units were late in the building stage and couldn’t be installed before the end of the year.

Hassel said, “It’s seasonal.  We have to do it in the spring between the warmer air but not yet hot and past the winter cold.  I put the extra $11,000 in there because I don’t know what’s going to change when they start mounting those rooftop units.”

He stressed that the money to purchase those units was put back in the budget because the project wasn’t completed so they weren’t paid.

All three of the units are on site now waiting to be installed.

The council approved the motion by a majority vote.  Councilman Jon VanVactor was the lone opposing vote.
