Argos Utility Superintendent Jamie Lindstrom will look into mapping utilities with a GIS System.
Lindstrom told the Argos Town Council members last week that this will be easier for crews to locate utilities. As an example, they were trying to find a shut off for a house, but Lindstrom said it took two days. The utilities get buried or broken and they’re hard to find.
He commented that there are no maps. Additionally, if an operator gets mad and leaves, he throws away the paperwork so there’s no available information of what’s already been catalogued.
With a GIS system, the information is saved and can be accessed at any time at a quicker pace.
Lindstrom wasn’t ready to make a recommendation at last week’s meeting, but will keep researching companies. One GIS system he’s found would cost less than $30,000 if the work is done in-house. Even then it would take about two years to get everything in the system. He said he may have more information during the March meeting.
