Marshall County Election Board to Visit Vote Centers to Check Accessibility

Marshall County Election Board: Sean Surrisi, Deb VanDeMark, Rick Huff, and Voter Registration Deputy Melinda Keilman

The Marshall County Election Board will be headed to all of the Vote Centers in the county for a compliance check.

Clerk Deb VanDeMark reminded the board members that there is a checklist that they need to go over at each site to make sure the Vote Center is compliant with the Help America Vote Act and the American Disabilities Act.

“Does the parking area have sufficient disabled parking spaces? Is there a sign up stating that there’s disabled parking?  Is the route from the parking area to the entrance paved?  The route must be at least 36 inches wide, 80 inches above the surface of the walkway.  Is the entrance ramp a minimum of 36 inches?  Does the entrance have a level landing measuring a minimum of 5 feet with a minimum of 18 inches of poll-side clearance?  Do all doors, entrances and exits necessary to enter or leave have a minimum opening of 32 inches?  These are things we have to check,” stated VanDeMark.

There is also paperwork concerning the Indiana polling place security guidelines which will need to be reviewed.

The board members agreed that they will spend a morning and visit all of the Vote Centers to ensure they remain compliant with standards outlined in the state checklist.
