There are two bills in the House of Representatives that have the watchful eye of the Culver Town Council members.
House Bill 1060 addresses the regulation of building materials. Council member Rich West said the bill would essentially relinquish local control over building products, materials, and aesthetics for commercial and residential properties as some aspects could fall under state statute.
“Local planning basically becomes ineffective. I would encourage the council to consider taking a position that we’re opposed to that legislation,” stated West.
Another bill is House Bill 1165 where Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim urges opposition.
“It would basically prevent us from charging a property owner for the tenant’s unpaid water bill. It’s only targeted at municipalities. It would basically be written off as bad debt, but those costs would end getting passed on, basically, to the neighbor.”
The town council members voted unanimously to send opposition letters to appropriate legislators to have their voices heard. The letters will be signed by Town Manager Jonathan Leist or Council President Ginny Bess Munroe.
