The Marshall County Commissioners considered a recomendation this week that the county stay in the negotiation class in the multi-district litigation against opioid distributors and manufacturers.
County Attorney Jim Clevenger explained that the county joined the litigation in the past two years noting an increase in opioid deaths in recent years. The claim was that the defendants made opioids too readily available not knowing the addictive traits and the dangers of a person overdosing on opioids.
Clevenger explained that the recommendation from the legal counsel in Indianapolis is that the county be a member of the negotiation class in the opioid litigation. He also recommended that the county stay in the negotiations class.
The commissioners approved a motion to stay in the litigation process.
Any money the county could receive in this matter would be used toward education and treatment to those affected by opioid abuse identified by the Marshall County Health Department.
