Plymouth City Attorney Sean Surrisi presented the Board of Public Works and Safety members this week with the ratification of an executive order regarding parking on Miller Drive.
Surrisi explained that last year the board made a decision to restrict parking on both sides of Miller Drive during the construction of the Aquatic Center, the Early Childhood Learning Center and the Marshall County Philantrophy Center.
When the open house and ribbon cutting for both facilities occurred on Oct. 5, an executive order was initiated to allow parking on the north side of the road. Surrisi asked that the executive order remain in place to allow parking on the north side of the road due to the delay in paving the Aquatic Center parking lot. He explained that the capital fundraising campaign was successful in collecting the necessary funds for the parking lot, but with the proposed hotel project at that site, the completion of the parking lot will wait until the spring.
“Part of the construction of the hotel looked to use a portion of that parking lot for staging of construction materials,” explained Surrisi. “We were advised that we could see some significant degrading of the parking lot just by that construction activity. The decision was made not to put in a brand new parking lot that potentially could be damaged while the hotel is under construction.”
In the meantime, the Plymouth Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance to extend the time for the installation of the parking lot.
The board approved the ratification of the executive order as presented.
