With the rise in population at the Marshall County Jail, the Marshall County Council considered an additional appropriation in the amount of $12,000 for janitorial supplies.
The population at the jail has been over the 239 recommended capacity for the year, prompting officials to begin discussions concerning the construction of an additional jail pod and housing inmates at the Elkhart Jail to alleviate the overcrowding issue. Just last week, Elkhart County officials approved an interlocal agreement with Marshall County to house inmates there at a rate of $40 per day.
The council members approved the additional appropriation request.
Another additional appropriation request from Sheriff Matt Hassel was for wages for officers to participate in lake enforcement patrols. The request was for $3,500 in wages overtime and $1,500 in wages seasonal. There was a shortfall in wages this year, but the wages are anticipated to be paid for in a reimbursable Lake Enforcement grant. Lake Association members also contribute to those wages. The council approved the request as presented.
