Marshall County School Administrators Discuss Security Upgrades

Administrators from the Marshall County schools updated the Marshall County Safety Committee members on efforts made in making schools safer for students.

The State’s Secured School Safety Grants have allowed for the purchase and installation of security cameras in most buildings.  Funding also helped purchase school bus stop arm cameras in some cases.

Bremen Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jim White noted that plans are in the works for upgrading the entrances to provide more security for the students and staff there.  He said patrons will need to go through a single, secured entry and state the purpose of the visit to office staff before being allowed into the building.

The implementation of School Resource Officers has also been a priority.  Many corporations have officers in place and others are finalizing procedures and funding to include an officer on campus to patrol the halls.

Union North United Schools are working to link the school’s security cameras with local law enforcement.  The officers would become familiar with the layout of the school and if a serious incident is reported, school officials can direct the officer to the exact area of concern by following the live footage.

On the topic of safety, Indiana State Police Trooper Ted Bohner said if anyone sees something, say something.  The same goes if anyone hears of a plan of attack.  He encourages everyone to feel the empowerment to speak up as it could mean saving many lives.
