Following the budget discussion by the Marshall County Council last week, a subcommittee who has dissected the report from Waggoner, Irwin and Scheele (WIS) concerning the job descriptions and salaries, gave the council members a recommendation to consider.
Councilman Jon VanVactor said fellow subcommittee members Penny Lukenbill and Heath Thornton looked at the report from WIS and compared it against the salary ordinance to come up with the median pay range for each position.
“After we found the prevailing wage for each category, we found out that there were some employees that were below that prevalent wage and some that were above,” said VanVactor. “We have come up with a recommendation for the whole council to look at for the calendar year 2020 to bring these in line for each one of these categories.”
He added that some positions will see an increase in pay while seven employees would not receive an increase in wages until everyone else in that category rose to the level where those employees are currently standing.
“We didn’t think the appropriate thing to do would be to decrease someone’s wages, but again we wanted to make this equal work for equal pay and come up with a recommended wage rate by category for 2020.”
VanVactor noted that nothing is final in this recommendation until the salary ordinance is in place.
However, he asked that the council adopt the working document prepared by the subcommittee as a recommended wage rate for the auditor to use for the 2020 wages. A motion to that effect was unanimously approved by the council.
