Marshall County Council Approves Resolution for Additional Court

Marshall County Council members took an additional step to help the county move forward with a fourth General Jurisdictional Court Monday morning.

Marshall County Superior Court No. 2 Judge Dean Colvin appeared before the county council and commissioners in the past couple of months to provide statistical data to prove that the county needs an additional court to help move cases through the system more efficiently.

A resolution was presented to allow Judge Colvin to testify to the Committee on Courts and Code at the state level who would either approve or deny the proposal.  If it is approved, then it would be presented in a bill to the State Legislature for a vote.  If it receives favorable support, the Governor would sign a bill and then Marshall County Superior Court No. 3 could be put into operation after July 1, 2020.

The resolution outlines the council’s support of the fourth court, as read by Council President Judy Stone.

“WHEREAS, the Marshall County Council has determined a need exists for an additional court for Marshall County; WHEREAS, the Marshall County Council has agreed to support the new court including additional staff, office equipment, supplies, and any other expenses that are involved with a new court in allowing it to exist; BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, the Marshall County Council approves a resolution fully supporting the request for a new court for Marshall County…,” stated Stone.

The council members unanimously approved the resolution. Funding for the court will be considered in the 2021 budget, if the proposal is approved by the State.
