Marshall County employees will continue to have the primary and general election days off, at least for next year’s presidential election. The county commissioners approved the 2020 holiday schedule last week, but not without some debate.
Commissioner Mike Delp said he didn’t see why all county employees needed election days off. “If somebody wants to work [the elections], I’m all for them working, getting that day off, getting paid for it, however that works for the election board. But to have those days off county-wide just doesn’t make sense to me.”
But Auditor Julie Fox pointed out that if the Clerk’s Office were to conduct regular business on those days, election headquarters would have to be relocated, along with its computer system. Commissioner Kevin Overmyer said Clerk Deb VanDeMark wasn’t necessarily opposed to the change but would rather wait until after the presidential election.
The commissioners also agreed to give employees July 3 off next year, since July 4 falls on a Saturday. In all, Marshall County employees will have 13 paid holidays in 2020. Commissioner Overmyer joked, “That will put everybody’s minds at ease, if you’re a county employee.”
The commissioners also approved their 2020 meeting schedule and the 2020 employee pay schedule.
