Election Law Changes Regarding the Absentee Mail Application Deadline

Marshall County Clerk Deb VanDeMark informed the election board members this week that a law has changed pertaining to the deadline for the absentee mail application.

“The law changed so that when a voter mails their absentee application back it must be back here no later than 12 days before the election rather than 8 days before the election,” said VanDeMark.

She added that the biggest problem was mail processing.

“A number of counties received things back in the mail after the date so they didn’t get to count them.  They were trying to change it so people would make sure that everything would be received back by the clerk’s office by the deadline and would get counted that way.”

For reference, VanDeMark showed the election board members that one voter asked to receive an absentee application in last year’s election and it was sent out on Oct. 19, 2018.  The voter apparently didn’t get the ballot until March of this year.
