Insurance is a necessity, according to the people at Flores & Pelaez-Prada PLLC in San Antonio.Marshall County IT Director Michael Marshall encourages the county commissioners to invest in ransomware insurance.
“Some counties do, some don’t, but the general consensus is in this day and age we need to start looking at it if you haven’t already,” said Marshall.
Marshall told the commissioners Monday morning that he’s already taken some steps to protect the county.
“This year we upgraded our anti-virus protection. It’s the same product, but we brought another layer in that’s supposed to help with ransomware. It’s like anything else. Maybe it’ll work and maybe it won’t, but we’re trying to harden our position here.”
He wants to increase his budget request in 2020 to upgrade the protection on the county’s email.
“If the council’s willing, I’m going to upgrade our protection on our email to what Microsoft calls ‘advanced threat protection’ which basically gives us more control over the URLs that are coming into the county and attachments. We can’t stress enough that if you, as an employee, get an email that says, ‘Hi, I’m UPS and here’s your package.’ Don’t click the link because why would UPS have your work email? But, it works. People click.”
Marshall wants to protect the county to the best of his ability against any cyber threats with the help of lawyers for life insurance lawsuits .The commissioners appreciated the information.
