Despite a slow start in remodeling efforts at the Culver Beach Lodge, crews are moving right along with renovation plans.
Culver Town Manager Jonathan Leist attended a construction meeting last week where crews have been working to catch up after a moisture issue.
“They’d been having some struggles just trying to get the ground dry enough to start pouring concrete,” explained Leist. “They did a large excavation on the north side of the building facing the street and it went down almost to lake level. We had water coming in from all different directions on it. The dry weather definitely helped along with extra pumping and things like that to get it dried out. They started pouring those walls and footers this week so that’s exciting.”
The Culver Beach Lodge is undergoing a major renovation with new plumbing, restroom fixtures, and electrical updates. The main floor will also under go a major facelift with an addition on the street side to allow for a new staircase and elevator.
While crews from Michiana Contracting were waiting for drier weather, Leist said they were able to demolish some of the main floor to make way for improvements.
The Town of Culver received an OCRA grant to assist with the cost of this project as part of the Stellar Communities Designation effort.
Town officials say the project is anticipated to be done in March, as stipulated in the grant paperwork.
Until then, parking around the Culver Beach Lodge has been modified to accommodate the construction project. Several handicapped parking spots have moved and council members urge patrons to be mindful of that adjustment. It was noted at the Culver Town Council meeting last week that police officers are ticketing those who park in those spots without proper authorization.
