Marshall County Sheriff’s Office Warning Residents of Tax Warrant Phone Scam

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a phone scam. In a post to the Marshall County Central Dispatch Facebook page Wednesday, officials said they’ve been getting complaints about someone calling residents and telling them they have a tax warrant through Marshall County.

The number on the caller ID appears to be the Sheriff’s Office number, and the caller reportedly tells residents to buy gift cards and give them the codes, or the resident will be arrested. However, they’re told to call a different number to make the payment.

The Sheriff’s Office says if you actually have a tax warrant, you’ll get a letter through the mail and be asked to pay it at the Sheriff’s Office with cash, check, or money order. The county will never call you to say you have a tax warrant and will never ask you to buy a gift card to pay it. The Sheriff’s Office adds that a tax warrant is not an arrestable offense.

Officials ask anyone who gets such a phone call, should not give the caller any information and hang up immediately. If you’re not sure if a call is legitimate, you can call the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office at 574-936-3187 to check.
