The Culver Community Schools Corporation is taking steps to boost students’ social and emotional learning skills. Superintendent Karen Shuman says the school board last week approved the addition of a new social/emotional academic learning coordinator, as one of a number of hirings for the new school year.
“Erika James has been hired for that position,” Shuman says. “We’re excited for that new prospecting program of helping kids, coach them through those types of skills that are needed.”
Meanwhile, Shuman says the social/emotional learning and employability skills will be used as the behavior management system at the middle/high school. “Along with that, at the elementary, they have adopted a universal positive behavior intervention system that is going to be employed K-through-five, as a program that also focuses on the social/emotional learning of students and the employability skills standards as a discipline measure, instead of some of the traditional approaches to behavior changes,” Shuman adds.
She says those changes were incorporated into the 2019-2020 student handbooks, which the school board officially approved last week. The high school handbook also outlines the requirements of the new Graduation Pathways.
