Argos Officials Take Action to Implement Paid EMT Positions and Increase EMS Drivers’ Shift Pay

In an effort to bring in more assistance for Argos EMS, Town Council members recently provided their approval for some department changes.

After having difficulty finding enough people to sign-up for voluntary Emergency Medical Technician positions, town officials have decided to hire about 10 EMTs as part-time employees.

Members voted on the matter when they met for their second meeting of the month last Wednesday.

The hiring process will be overseen by EMS Director Sarah McCallum. The starting pay will be around $10 per hour but will be dependent on experience.

Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Mullaney stated that volunteers are still welcome to apply if individuals would like to assist the EMS Department but are unable to commit to a paid part-time position.

She noted that in addition to approving the paid EMT positions, council members also voted for a shift pay increase for EMS drivers. The pay has been raised from $15 for a 12-hour shift to $25 per shift.

Amendments still need to be made to the existing EMS bylaws to reflect the approved changes. The updated bylaws will come before the council in a future meeting.

Clerk-Treasurer Mullaney added that town officials are extremely grateful to surrounding communities for assisting Argos with emergencies as they’ve be been dealing with the shortage of personnel and noted that these changes are expected to help strengthen the local EMS Department.
