Plans to Improve Pioneer Drive in Plymouth in Discussion Stage

Pioneer Drive in Plymouth could see improvements soon as plans to update the area go into the discussion stage.

Plymouth City Engineer Rick Gaul asked the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission members Tuesday night to start discussing plans with a consultant.

“We’re getting a lot of heavy traffic on that road from trucks coming in and out and part of the road is starting to subside on one side,” explained Gaul.  “Right now, with the construction going on, we’re trying to keep it filled in and working.”

Gaul said the project could be included in a request for Community Crossings funding with matching money from the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission.

Prior to that, Gaul said some surveying work needs to be done before going into the involved project.

“There’s going to be drainage involved and it’s going to be a pretty heavy-duty design.  We’re looking at possibly widening the street to three lanes.  We might going in that back portion and reducing it to two lanes.  Basically, we have a lot of non-access easements and the only place people would be going is on Commerce Drive.”

The road could be extended all the way to 7B Road.

The area is seeing expansion projects with Pretzels, Inc. and the construction of a new manufacturing space for Harrington Noodles.  The gas station and convenience store at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Pioneer Drive also attracts a lot of truck traffic.

With the Redevelopment Commission’s approval, Gaul will come back with a proposal from a consultant which will be funded by the Redevelopment Commission.  The actual construction could be funded at 50 percent with Community Crossings funds with the other half coming from the Redevelopment Commission.

The commission members agreed to allow Gaul to move forward with obtaining consultant information to bring back for consideration in a future meeting.
