The viaduct by the River Gate South apartment complex in Plymouth may get a facelift in the latter part of June.
City Attorney Sean Surrisi told the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission members last week that a volunteer group has preliminary plans to do some streetscaping there as well as rehabilitating the look of the viaduct. He explained that it was part of an improvement plan developed in 2008 and revived when the River Gate South apartment complex was initiated.
No funding is allocated for the project, but the group obtained donations of paint from a major company while scissor lifts will be made available by the company working at the River Gate South construction site to assist in the project.
The group sought the approval from the railroad company, but clearance hasn’t been given quite yet. They await an answer before moving forward with the project.
Surrisi said once the clearance is given, he will have the volunteers sign liability waivers and ensure the proper protection is worn when the rust is blasted off the current structure and when the rust eliminator, paint primer and paint is applied. The red paint color will match that of the River Gate South apartment buildings.
Surrisi added that when the project begins traffic may be reduced to one lane so workers can work in a safer environment.
More work may be added as part of Plymouth’s complementary project in the Regional Stellar Designation Regional Development Plan.
