The U.S. Census Bureau is looking for volunteers for the upcoming Census count.
Recruiter Richard Underkofler told the Marshall County Commissioners that Partnership Coordinator, Jackie Beverly, is looking to organize a new complete county committee. She will help to get the word out about what the Census Bureau wants in order to hire people to help take the 2020 census count.
He said there are several phases of the Census process. The first is map verification.
“The Census worker who is hired will take a map of your county of all the townships and Census tracts, drive down the county roads, and identify if the house is still there as it was 10 years ago. If it isn’t there, delete it. Is there a new house there? Add it,” said Underkofler.
Address verification goes along with this phase so the Census surveys can be sent to the right addresses.
The first phase begins in July and hiring will begin in June.
The second phase begins April 1, 2020 when the distribution of the Census surveys occurs. In this phase, the Census worker will assist residents in filling out the survey. They can be filled out and mailed back, taken online, or by calling a worker to give answers over the phone.
The final phase involves knocking on doors to make sure that people are able to complete the forms to return to the Census officials.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, it is important to fill out the forms accurately to determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. It also helps to determine the distribution of federal funds to local communities.
