Superior Court No. 2 Judge Dean Colvin asked the Marshall County Council members Monday morning to change the pay range for the Marshall County Drug and Alcohol Education Program Director.
He said since a change in 2011 created the temporary director’s position, but it hasn’t been updated to reflect the official director who has been in place for the past few years. However, he said, the State recognizes the director of the program as does the local department.
With the change in 2011, Judge Colvin said he found the compensation for the director’s position needs to be updated. The results of the wage study by Waggoner, Irwin and Scheele revealed that low end of the range to be about $44,000 with the mid-range at almost $49,000 and the external high point to be about $53,800.
The current director’s salary is $44,445. It was stressed that the salary is supported by the fees paid by participants in the program, and NOT supported by General Fund, or taxpayer, dollars.
Judge Colvin noted that with the qualifications the director holds, including a bachelor’s degree and specific certifications to oversee clients in the Drug and Alcohol Education Program, the director should be compensated accordingly.
He asked for the salary range to be approved as presented by Waggoner, Irwin and Scheele.
Councilman Jon VanVactor pointed out that the position is not categorized to receive the highest compensation of $53,000 but rather at roughly $48,000 as a starting point. Judge Colvin responded that the job description of the director needs to be reviewed as compensation may be higher.
In the end, the council members approved a motion to raise the MCDAP director’s salary up to $48,029.80. A committee overseeing the job descriptions and wage study by Waggoner, Irwin and Scheele will go over the paperwork to see if changes need to be made.
