The Culver Town Council members reviewed the trash and recycling services contract Tuesday night.
Town Manager Jonathan Leist said it is time to renew the contract and after speaking to the town’s current provider recycling costs are going up which means residential costs could be going up at least 12 percent this year after the current contract ends in June, if the town continues with the current vendor.
“I think a lot of it is lack of purchasing coming from overseas and that’s really pushed down the commodities prices for the recyclable goods. It makes it more expensive for them to process and collect,” said Leist. “We’ve had a decade now without trash increases in Culver. I don’t know many communities that can say that. They want us to renew and they’re interested in working with us, but they’re not able to add another year or two years at the current rate.”
While the Culver Town Council is happy with the current service, Town Attorney Jim Clevenger advised the council members to seek bids for services.
“Just because there is a price increase I think the council is better situated to answer to the citizens that they’ve got the best price for their trash collection and the rates thereto by bidding out the service.”
The Culver Town Council members agreed to solicit bids for trash and recycling services. Several qualifications and specifications will be included in the packet.
