Owner of Unsafe Property in Culver Files Appeal

The Culver Town Council members learned Tuesday night that the owners of the former City Tavern Building have filed an appeal from the judge’s decision to demolish the building.

Town Attorney Jim Clevenger said the 27 Group, LLC filed an appeal on the last day possible to do so and now the matter will head to the Indiana Court of Appeals in Indianapolis.  No timeline was revealed in the case.

Town Manager Jonathan Leist said demolition specifications were being compiled in case an appeal wasn’t filed, but that action is now on hold.  He also obtained three quotes from environmental companies for phase 1 of the process.  Those bid amounts were not disclosed during Tuesday night’s meeting so they can revisit them if, or when, the time comes.

The condition of the former City Tavern building at 415 Lakeshore Drive in Culver has been discussed for several years and issues increase as time goes on.  The reason for the environmental services is that there is mold inside the building and last year the neighbors complained of the pungent odor emitting from the rotting structure.
