Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel presented his Commissary Fund Budget to the Marshall County Council members Monday morning that will include classes for offenders who are serving time in the jail.
Sheriff Hassel said a 12-step program, certification classes, and a GED class will be funded with an increase of $20,000 to the Inmate Services line item in the Commissary Fund.
“In March, we will have a hospitality certification program brought to us by the college over in Warsaw on a grant. We will also be starting the GED program provided through the GED office at Plymouth High School. We are adding a 12-step addiction treatment program to our Merck program,” said Sheriff Hassel.
Sheriff Hassel said the four-week hospitality certification program produces a nationally-recognized certification in food service and hotel or motel service for those who successfully complete the program. He mentioned that another program may also be offered to offenders later.
“It may be followed up with another four-week manufacturing warehouse certification program that’s also nationally recognized.” Many warehouse companies and businesses like Fripp Warehousing have these necessary certifications.
He added that these programs will help the inmates build a resume for when they rejoin society.
The council members unanimously approved the increase in the line item for these programs.
