An inmate processing fee ordinance was adopted by the Marshall County Commissioners on Monday morning.
The document states that the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department will charge a fee of $50 as an inmate processing fee. The processing fee shall be added to the inmate’s fine and court costs as an additional cost in the event an inmate is convicted.
The fee may be waived if the inmate is found to be indigent, the inmate is being held for another agency for a per diem payment, or if the inmate is being held for another agency.
The use of the funds collected may be spent on inmate education and counseling, or equipment, education and training for the Marshall County Jail staff and jailers.
A public hearing to gather comments on the proposed ordinance was held Monday morning, but no member of the public made a comment.
Following the public hearing, the commissioners suspended the rules and approved the ordinance on the second and third readings. The ordinance will go into effect in 30 days and after it’s published.
