A decision on the issue of criminal charges for the driver in a fatal school bus crash in Marshall County in December will be announced Friday afternoon.
An Indiana State Police investigation found that just after 9 a.m. ET on Dec. 5, 2018, a yellow 2016 International bus owned by the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation had just stopped, as required by law, at the railroad crossing just south of Michigan Road. Apparently, as the bus began to accelerate it was struck from behind in the left rear by a white 2016 Freightliner straight truck. The truck, which was towing a trailer with the use of an emergency tow, was being driven by 26-year-old Tylor Perry, of Camby.
The accident resulted in injuries to several students on the bus and fatal injuries sustained by 13-year-old Owen Abbott, an eighth grader at the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation.
The crash report was obtained by media outlets in mid-January. Among other things, it revealed that Perry told police he was trying to take off a sweatshirt and fleece jacket he was wearing, causing him to briefly take his eyes off the road.
Perry’s driving behaviors and other aspects of the incident not specified by the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office were under review by a Grand Jury made up of Marshall County citizens who convened to deliberate on Monday, Feb. 4.
The information will be released at 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday in the Commissioners’ Meeting Room on the second floor of the Marshall County Building at 112 W. Jefferson Street in Plymouth.
