Stan Klotz, who attended his first meeting as a commissioner, stated that he’d like to set up a work session with the county council members to discuss the roads and the plan to work on them. He said the gathering would also give Highway Supervisor Jason Peters a chance to talk about his budget. Peters explained that there is a change in the Motor Vehicle Highway (MVH) budget where half of MVH funds will be placed into an MVH Fund and half will be placed into the MVH Restricted Fund for use for construction, reconstruction and preservation efforts. There may be other provisions for that fund, specifically maintenance, but no further information was available during Monday’s meeting.
That joint session meeting was not scheduled during the commissioners meeting, but a notice will be issued once a date is confirmed.
On the topic of a highway engineer, Klotz talked about a policy of contracting an engineer on an as-needed basis. Commissioner Mike Delp noted that’s the current practice. He added that the initial idea of a highway engineer was to have someone full-time that would be available to take over the duties of the highway supervisor and engineering.
One other issue the commissioners are planning to tackle this year deals with concerns on failing septic systems in the county as the Marshall County Health Department is involved in litigation along those lines.
