Marshall County Council Passes on Providing Funding Assistance for Housing Project

Representatives of Garden Court, Inc. asked the Marshall County Council members this week for an update on a decision on a funding assistance request for a permanent supportive housing facility in Plymouth.

In a previous meeting, the county council members were informed of a multi-family housing project to be constructed on West Jefferson Street property currently owned by Ancilla College.

The housing project is intended to provide a stable living environment for individuals in the community who currently do not have one, such as people living out of motels, in their cars or “couch surfers” who venture from place to place without a home to call their own.

While the facility will be centrally located in Plymouth, this project is being framed as a place where all Marshall County residents could find a safe haven.

At the time, the representatives asked for a $50,000 donation from the county.

During Monday’s meeting, Council President Judy Stone said a vote hasn’t been taken, but the timing is not good as there are a lot of funding decisions the county needs to make in 2019 such as the road program and a potential jail expansion project. She said the end fund balance of 2018 isn’t at a place where she feels is stable to provide funding toward the project.

Representatives say the housing project is still moving forward, with soil testing set to begin.
