Bremen Town Council to Consider Buying House for Demolition

The Bremen Town Council members are attempting to purchase a property in town to demolish and create a gathering space.

Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said the property at 121 Jackson Street is in foreclosure and listed as condemned. Town Attorney Anthony Wagner has been discussing the purchase with the bank. Weldy said the owner currently owes more money on the house than what the town’s offer could be as the town is bound by what the property appraises. There are liens against the property.

If the property goes to sheriff’s sale, those liens would be stripped from the property, but the town runs into an issue if another bidder bids on the property and can pay more than what the town can legally pay.

The home is uninhabitable and needs to be torn down, according to Weldy.

If the town purchases the home, the council members hope to build a roofed pavilion in order for another spot in town to have a sheltered place for the farmer’s market or another location for community events. The project was a part of the county’s Regional Stellar Communities Designation application, but the county was not selected as a designee. Weldy said the town will continue with the project.

Weldy added that he or Wagner may have more information at the next meeting.
