Argos Police Officer to Attend School Resource Officer Training This Month

Multiple entities in the Town of Argos continue to work together to secure the safety of students in the community.

Over the last few months, officials from the Argos Community School Corporation, the Town Council and the Police Commission have been coordinating with one about hiring a School Resource Officer (SRO).

Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Mullaney mentioned that Officer David Carrell will be attending training this month to learn the skills necessary to serve as an SRO.

As previously reported, the NASRO Basic School Resource Officer Course is a 40-hour block of instruction designed to help law enforcement officers obtain tools that will allow them to build positive relationships with students and school administrators.

Mullaney noted that even though he will be attending the training, there are still a few more steps before Carrell will officially be the SRO for the school corporation.

She explained, “We are going to send him to school to learn how to be an SRO officer but he still has to be vetted not only through the council be he has to be accepted by the school.”

Additionally, representatives of the Police Department and the school corporation will be working out a contract that will define the specific responsibilities for this dual purpose officer.

School officials will set the hours for the months that officer would work for as an SRO and the Police Department reps will determine the officer’s schedule for the remainder of the year.

In past interviews, town and school officials both shared that they’re hoping to have all the details ironed out so the SRO officer will be able to start working for the school corporation after Christmas Break. However, the official start date has not been finalized at this time.
