Plymouth and Argos Receive Funding From Community Crossings Matching Grant

Two Marshall County municipalities will be able to complete some major roadwork thanks to the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program.

The Town of Argos received the full amount that they requested which was $926,970.24. Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Mullaney said some of the funds will be utilized to conduct a 2-inch mill and fill on Woodland Trail, which is one of the oldest streets in the town.

Mullaney said the streets in the Westview Courts subdivision were included in the application as well since they’ll need to be redone after the utility crews complete a drainage project there.

Another one of the major projects they’ll be taking care of with that money is constructing sidewalks, curbs and streets in the Colonial Estates subdivision.

She noted that town officials received some assistance with their grant application from the architecture and engineering firm Abonmarche. She said they were extremely helpful with the process since they were responsible for creating the layout for Colonial Estates.

Since the Town of Argos has fewer than 10,000 people, officials only have to supply a 25 percent match for the grant.

Meanwhile, the City of Plymouth received $479,907.68 in Community Crossings funds. Street Superintendent Jim Marquardt said that Plymouth’s population is just barely over the 10,000 limit so city officials will have to supply a 50 percent match for their grant.

Marquardt said the projects submitted for this round were streets that were initially pitched in 2017 which didn’t make the cut. He said there are seven projects they’ll be looking to get done with these funds.

Those projects include:

  • Randolph Drive from Jefferson Street to Monroe Street
  • Stanley Drive from Hehr Lane to Jim Neu Drive
  • Walnut Street from Jefferson Street to Monroe Street
  • Madison Street from Plum Street to Center Street
  • Kingston Road from Pennsylvania Avenue to Jefferson Street
  • Lemler Lane from Michigan Street to Bayless Street
  • Chester Street from Clinton Street to Oakhill Avenue

Now that officials are aware of how much funding they’ve received, they have to secure contractors for the various projects. One of the requirements for this grant is that the projects must be bid out and contracts have to be awarded before the end of the year.

However, that doesn’t mean the work needs to be done right away. Due to the impending inclement weather, a lot of the work will have to wait until the spring.
