Marshall County Attorney Jim Clevenger is still working on drafting a no thru trucks ordinance.
Highway Supervisor Jason Peters told the commissioners last week that he is supposed to be getting a copy of a similar ordinance enacted in Elkhart County and one in Steuben County.
Clevenger wanted clarification on what type of truck falls under the ordinance so the sheriff’s department can be clear on enforcement. Peters indicated that commercial vehicles 26,000 pounds or more would be the specific vehicles included in the ordinance.
A fine will be included in the ordinance if those high-profile vehicles are found to be in violation. The commissioners previously thought that a fine of $100 would be imposed for violators.
The issue was brought up in October when the commissioners discussed several complaints about damage the semi trucks are causing when they use county roads as a shortcut to a destination.
There are several roads that the Marshall County Highway Department will be looking at in order to keep truck traffic on state highways as the state road infrastructure is sturdier to support the high profile traffic.
