Walkerton, North Liberty Elementary Students Get Visit from Pediatrician

The Walkerton and North Liberty Elementary School students were recently visited by a Pediatrician from Riley Children’s Hospital.

Walkerton Elementary School Principal Tim Davis told the John Glenn School Board members that the students were reading the book Wonder as part of the Wildcats’ “Choose Kind” theme and Dr. Michael Goodman came to speak about his condition, Treacher Collins Syndrome, which is similar to the condition experienced by the main character in the book.

“He spoke about kindness, friendship, peer pressure, and Treacher Collins Syndrome,” said Davis. “Dr. Goodman has TCS like the character Auggie Pullman in Wonder. We learned a lot and it’s quite possible that our hearts grew a bit too.”

Treacher Collins Syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by deformities of the ears, eyes, cheekbones, and chin.

North Liberty Elementary School Principal Randy Romer said the presentation was impressive.

“It’s a great testament to somebody that can share some wisdom with our students about the Treacher Collins Syndrome,” said Romer.

The principals thanked all who helped in bringing Dr. Goodman to the school including teacher Amy Weiss and the different organizations who donated funds toward the effort.
