The Marshall County Commissioners discussed a resolution Monday morning to move forward with application of a Brownfield Grant as part of a coalition.
A brownfield is a property previously used for industrial purposes or some commercial uses. It may have been contaminated with hazardous waste and the Brownfield Grant helps assess those properties and plan clean up strategies.
Leah Thill from the Michiana Area Council of Governments will be working to get the grant and left a form for the county to identify areas that may be eligible for grant funds. She also urges residents to do their due diligence when buying private property to ensure there is no contamination of any kind. The grant also allows for an education piece to ensure Marshall County residents have knowledge going forward when purchasing property.
The commissioners unanimously approved support for the grant application.
