To ensure the county’s voting machines are safe from potential hackers, the Marshall County Election Board will apply for an Election Security Grant to provide additional security with the storage of voting machines.
Clerk Deb VanDeMark told county officials that the money is provided by the Secretary of State’s office to assist counties in further securing election equipment.
“Election equipment is stored in a separate room under lock and key,” commented VanDeMark. “The grant would cover video recording. If anyone were to enter the room and tamper with the machines, or if anyone questioned it, we could pull the video.”
The grant would be for $3,886.25 for the project as quoted by Vermillion Systems who would install the equipment if the grant is awarded to the county.
The Marshall County Commissioners approved the grant request Monday morning while the Marshall County Council members gave their blessing last week. VanDeMark indicated that the Election Board also voted to apply for the grant in a previous meeting.
