The Marshall County Commissioners will take action to limit semi truck traffic on county roads to help sustain the condition of the infrastructure.
Several complaints have been submitted to the commissioners lately about damage the semi trucks are causing using county roads as a shortcut to a destination. Highway Supervisor Jason Peters said he contacted Elkhart County highway officials who indicated that “No Thru Truck” signs are on their county roads.
Some GPS directions produce the quickest route and it often times includes county roads.
There are several roads that the Marshall County Highway Department will be looking at in order to keep truck traffic on state highways as the state road infrastructure is sturdier to support the high profile traffic.
Plymouth-Goshen Trail and Fir Road are at the top of the list but highway department workers will assess areas that are in need of signage.
County Attorney Jim Clevenger will be drafting an ordinance to allow for clearer enforcement and fines. The ordinance may be up for first reading during the commissioners’ next meeting on Nov. 5.
