The members of the Culver-Union Township Fire Department will host an open house this Friday, Oct. 5 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. ET at the fire station (508 E. Lakeshore Drive) as a prelude to Fire Prevention Week Oct. 7 and a fundraising event for an aerial platform truck.
A vehicle demonstration is planned for the public and the Culver Boys and Girls Club during the open house.
The fundraiser for the aerial platform fire truck will continue through Nov. 18. The truck will allow firefighters to provide a safe rescue from a three-story building or taller which is a task they can’t do with the current equipment in the fleet. The aerial truck would also give firefighters the ability to fight structure fires from above, pumping water downwards from a safer location.
About $200,000 is needed for the fire truck. A portion of the cost is proposed in the 2019 budget, but not the entire amount. Over $130,000 has been raised from individuals and organizations, but the firefighters are looking for more help.
Charitable contributions toward this purchase are tax-deductible. Those who donate $20,000 or more will receive recognition on a plaque on the fire truck and those who donate between $1,000 and $20,000 will be recognized on a plaque at the fire department. Donors may remain anonymous if so desired.
Donations may be made in-person at the Culver Town Hall Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET or send checks to the town hall with a note that it is a fire truck donation in the memo line on the check. Online donations may also be made by accessing this link. For more information, call 574-842-3140.
