The Marshall County Commissioners approved the second reading of a speed limit ordinance that would lower the speed limit to 30 mph on 18B Road that includes State Road 117 ending at Queen Road South in addition to a half mile on Queen Road North.
Highway Supervisor Jason Peters did not have the results of a traffic count on 18B Road for the commissioners’ review so they opted to pass the ordinance on second reading. They hope to have that information by their next meeting on Sept. 17.
Nine residents in that area known as Maxinkuckee Village petitioned the commissioners for a lower speed limit in the area. The current limit is 40 mph, but since the area has narrow roads and lacks sidewalks, it poses a hazard with increased pedestrian traffic. The petition asked for a reduction to 20 mph, but the commissioners settled for a lower speed limit to 30 mph.
