It doesn’t matter if it’s a student or a regular community member. Safety is always at the forefront of county officials.
On Tuesday morning, school superintendents and administrators, emergency preparedness professionals, transportation directors, law enforcement, school safety specialists and media members came together at the Plymouth Community Schools Administration Building to further discuss safety plans in the community and in the schools.
Valparaiso Community Schools Associate Superintendent Dr. Julie Lauck attended the meeting to produce some tools that could engage the local officials in their research of safety practices. “One County, One Protocol” is the goal in the county so the same terminology can be used at each school corporation and emergency services agency so everyone knows what the protocol is in place at the time of the emergency.
Dr. Lauck also presented some ideas of what their local safety committee has enacted as their plan so Marshall County can benefit from those discussions.
The school superintendents and school safety specialists intend to come up with agreements for mutual aid in the case of an emergency.
Pertinent technology apps were discussed in order to alert law enforcement of a threat. Tabletop exercises were suggested so all staff members can have a plan in mind if a certain emergency were to occur.
While plans are in place at each of the schools, they all plan to coordinate to have the same plan with the same language so it is seamless if personnel from other schools can help in a situation. The same guidelines can streamline the process.
The committee will next meet on Jan. 22 to further discuss plans.
