Traffic Congestion Could Lead to Parking Restrictions around Lincoln Junior High School

The after-school traffic congestion around the Lincoln Junior High School in Plymouth could lead to no parking restrictions for safety purposes.

Plymouth Police Chief David Bacon told the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members this week that the south side of Garro Street is usually filled with vehicles in the anticipation of student after-school pick-up. The north side of the street usually has residential parking. With that, Bacon said the situation is not ideal.

“When you have people on the north and south there is about one lane that you can go down through, coming and going, toward the junior high and from the junior high,” said Bacon. “There are buses that go in that area in addition to the vehicular traffic. Until the new junior high is built, we’re going to have issues about anywhere around the junior high. We’re just looking for a no parking zone that’ll solve the problem. If we need to get down there, or a fire truck, then it opens that up to where you can still have east and west traffic if you only have parking on one side of the street.”

The proposed no parking zone on Garro Street would be from Indiana to Liberty Street during school hours on Monday through Friday.

The street department will send out notices to the residents in the area to alert them of the potential change. Anyone with comments may attend the next meeting on Monday, Sept. 10. The board will then make a decision following any public comment.
