Adaptive Water Ski Clinic Planned this Weekend at Lake Maxinkuckee

An adaptive water ski clinic is set for this weekend at Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver.

Volunteer Tom Yuhas explained to the Culver Town Council members last week that it is an opportunity for those with physical disabilities to water ski. It’s hosted by the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana.

Those who are wheelchair-bound, suffer from Cerebral Palsy or amputees may participate. There are special water skis designed for individuals with physical challenges so they can participate in this fun water event.

While trained volunteers assist the skiers, other volunteers are needed to assist participants into the water and spotters. A deep water skier will be on jet skis and will help with spotting.

Yuhas said the skiers will enjoy their time in a scenic course.

“We have John Scott from the DNR involved and he’s going to be laying out a buoy course,” said Yuhas. “We’re basically going to go from the courtesy pier, head out a little bit toward the lighthouse, go more into the deeper water and come to about the Culver Academy Library and then bring them back in front of the courtesy pier.”

Yuhas invites all residents to watch and encourage the skiers on their day of fun in the water.

The water ski clinic is Friday, Aug. 24 and Saturday, Aug. 25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, weather permitting.
