Argos Officials Discuss Extreme Safety Hazard at the Intersection of SR 10 and US 31

Officials in the Town of Argos are working to address a dangerous intersection where accidents happen frequently. Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Mullaney reports that just over the last two weeks, nine accidents that resulted in a total of twelve injuries occurred at the intersection of SR 10 and US 31.

“There are just a lot of accidents and a lot of people being hurt.” She explained, “In the past two weeks we’ve had at least three helicopters flown to that scene.”

Mullaney said the matter was addressed during Wednesday’s Town Council meeting, as council members plan to reach out to multiple resources to get something done about this safety hazard.

“We need to get the word out that INDOT really needs to do something. We know that they proposed the J Turns which they thought was going to be the answer,” Mullaney went on, “but there’s no way a J Turn would work there. They’d come right over that hill and slam into the people waiting in the third lane trying to do a J Turn.”

The clerk-treasurer shared that town officials feel that they’ve come up with a solution to the problem but so far but they’ve been told their suggestion will not work.

“We want an interchange but they say there’s not enough room but that can’t be true.” Mullaney provided an example, “You know, the one on Kern Road up in South Bend, the off-ramp pretty much goes under the highway so there is a way to do it.”

Mullaney said the town council members plan to continue discussions with INDOT representatives, asking them to research a feasible solution that can be implemented as soon as possible.

They’ll also be reaching out to local and state representatives and as many media sources as they can in order to shed some light on this serious problem in Argos.

The letters are currently being written and they will be sent out next week. In the meantime, Mullaney said that officials want citizens to know that they are working to address these safety concerns at the intersection of SR 10 and US 31 in order to prevent any future injuries or potential fatalities.
