Police Standoff in Walkerton Ends Peacefully

A three-hour police standoff Wednesday night ended with no injuries.

According to the Walkerton Police Department, officers were called to 204 Norway Spruce Lane in Walkerton at about 10:45 p.m. on a report of a domestic disturbance. When officers arrived at the scene, Jacob William Kenny was reportedly seen running into the garage with an unknown item in his hand.

Officers were reportedly notified that Kenny threatened to shoot a woman with a shotgun. He also allegedly said that he would kill any officers that responded to the scene.

Kenny barricaded himself in an attic above the garage area, according to police.

The St. Joseph County SWAT was activated and was successful in negotiating Kenny’s surrender around 2 a.m. Police say a search warrant was obtained where officers located a large amount of marijuana.

Kenny, 28, was taken into custody and booked into the St. Joseph County Jail on preliminary felony charges of intimidation, maintaining a common nuisance, along with misdemeanor charges of dealing in marijuana, and resisting law enforcement.

The Walkerton Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Lakeville Police Department, North Liberty Police Department, St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, and SWAT team officers from St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, Mishawaka Police Department and the Pokagan Police Department.
